Subspecies Globorotalia truncatulinoides pachytheka Blow 1969

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985): In addition to the distinctions from the neotype of the subspecies truncatulinoides as pointed out above, the holotype of pachytheca differs in its smaller size (0.58 against 0.78 ram). Not counting the last two chambers, the neotype of truncatulinoides is exactly the same size as the holotype of pachytheca. It is possible therefore that the latter is not a fully grown specimen, and with two thin walled chambers added would be difficult to distinguish from a G. truncatulinoides truncatulinoides. To differentiate the two taxa merely on the presence or absence of a sheath like structure covering particularly the earlier chambers is also not satisfactory because such growth must progress gradually, from almost non existent in excelsa via distinct but still isolated pustules in truncatulinoides to fused pustules in pachytheca. |
