Species Turritella chilensis Sowerby 1846


Diagnosis / Definition:
Sowerby (1846):
Turritella testa elongato-turrita, anfractibus decem, ventricosis, spiraliter tricostatis, costis granulosis, intermedia majori, sutura in sulcum posita.
Discussion / Comments:
Nielsen (2003):
Das Gehäuse ist hochturmig mit konvexen bis fast geraden Windungen. Der Protoconch ist unbekannt. Die Sutur ist mäßig bis tief eingedrückt. Ein feiner subsuturaler Kiel und drei weitere, darunter liegende, sehr kräftige scharfe Kiele, von denen der mittlere der kräftigste ist, bilden die prominenten Skulpturelemente. Ein vierter kräftiger Kiel ist auf der letzten Windung zu sehen. Die Kiele sind rechteckig. Zwischen den Kielen befindet sich keine Skulptur. Maße: Höhe bis 50 mm. Turritella chilensis tritt zusammen mit einer Fauna auf, die als oberstes Miozän interpretiert wird (DeVries, pers. Mitt. 2002). Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde kein Material an den entsprechenden Lokalitäten gesammelt.

TYPE MATERIAL. Three pieces of matrix with several syntypes: NHM-G26418, NHM-G26419, NHM-G26420 (Isla Mocha). REMARKS. Incatella chilensis is intermediate between I. affinis (Hupé, 1854) (= I. hupei Nielsen in DeVries, 2007) and I. cingulatiformis (Möricke, 1896). This species lineage was recently reviewed and redescribed by DeVries (2007) who, on grounds of better and more material, was able to satisfactorily distinguish the involved species.
