Griffin & Nielsen (2008): TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype NHM-G26345. REMARKS. This species is referable to Kaitoa Marwick, 1931 [type species Scaphander (Kaitoa) haroldi Marwick, 1931], with fine spiral sculpture all over the shell. The shape of the shell is slightly more cylindrical than the very oval, Scaphander- like shell shown in the figure. This, together with the fine spiral sculpture all over the shell surface, suggests it fits better in Kaitoa than in Scaphander s.s. as suggested by Frassinetti & Covacevich (1995) and Frassinetti (2000). Frassinetti (2000) reported this species from Isla Guafo, Isla Guamblín and Tubul (Arauco), all these localities are regarded as early to late Pliocene in age. Whether the Recent Chilean Scaphander interruptus Dall, 1890 is closely related must be left open to an evaluation of a larger suite of material. |
