Species Kitchinites (Kitchinites) laurae Macellari 1986

Alternative name:
Kitchinites laurae Macellari 1986
Diagnosis / Definition:
MACELLARI (1986):
DIAGNOSIS.- Whorl section inflated. Venter wide, ornamented with relatively weak and closely spaced ribs. Radial ornamentation absent in the umbilical region, appearing in the outer one-fourth of the flank and composed of closely spaced prorsiradiate radial ribs. DESCRIPTION.- Moderately evolute shell with slightly inflated whorl section (Table 6). Flanks parallel, somewhat arched and con-tinued in an even, broad venter. Umbilical portion of the shell smooth. Ornamentation in the upper one-third of the flank composed of strongly prorsiradiate, closely spaced ribs that continue rectiradiate and less developed across the venter. Shell crossed by constrictions which start rectiradiate at the umbilicus but swing forward, slightly above the middle of the flank. A rounded elevation, more subdued than in K. (Kitchinites) darwini, pre-cedes and follows the shape of the constric-tions. Three to seven constrictions per whorl, becoming more abundant in the adult. Suture very similar to that of K. (K.) darwini (Figure 21).
Discussion / Comments:
MACELLARI (1986):
HOLOTYPE.- 0SU 38324, Station 190 (Figures 20.3-20.4). ORIGIN OF NAME.- Species dedicated to my wife Laura in recognition for her encouragement and assistance in the completion of this work. MATERIAL.- Eight specimens. Three are very well preserved, one as an internal mold and the other two with the entire shell preserved. REMARKS.- This species differs from K. (Kitchinites) darwini by its more rounded flanks, much wider venter and by the pres- ence of fainter and closely spaced ribs that become subdued when crossing the ventral margin. K. (K.) laurae is closely related to K. (K.) brevicostatus (Marshall) from the Mata Series of New Zealand, but differs because the ribs of the Antarctic species are absent in the umbilical portion, and no nodes are ob- served at the termination of the ribs. This species differs from K. (K.) hearni (Anderson) from the upper Turonian of the western U.S. (Anderson, 1958, P1. 38, figs. 1, la, 1 b) be- cause the latter has ribs that are continued into the umbilical region of the flank and because the constrictions do not show a marked inflection in the middle of the flank, as in K. (K.) laurae. LOCALITIES.- Seymour Island, Stations 150, 153, 190,325,326,356,377, D-83, E-83, St. 5?. STRATIGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION.- Lopez de Bertodano Formation, Pachydiscus riccardi to P. ultimus zones (late Maastrichtian).
