Diagnosis / Definition: | ||||||
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983): Test large, tightly coiled, trochespiral, subglobular to subquadrate, three to three and a half chambers in the final whorl increasing very slowly in size as added; sutures distinctly depressed, almost radial; surface coarsely perforated with spines and spine bases; umbilius narrow; primary aperture interiomarginal, umbilical, a long, low asymmetric arch bordered by a thin rim; sutural supplementary apertures, small, irregular on the spiral side. |

Kennett & Srinivasan (1983): Gs. conglobatus is distinguished by its thick-walled and tightly coiled test. Specimens representing an evolutionary and morphologic transition between Gs. extremus and Gs. conglobatus resemble Gs. conglobatus canimarensis Bermudez. We concur with Parker (1973) and Stainforth et al. (1975) in treating Gs. canimarensis as a synonym of Gs. conglobatus. Following Mistretta (1962), Globigerinoides gomitulus Seguenza, 1880) with a smaller and compact test than Gs. conglobatus is considered a junior synonym of Gs. conglobatus. Bolli & Saunders (1985): This Pliocene to Holocene large sized subglobular species (lectotype 0.85 mm) with its later chambers distinctly depressed is easily recognizable. Bermudez (1961) erected a G. canimarensis (Fig. 21.3) as an ancestral form of G. conglobatus. It differs in smaller test size and higher arched primary and secondary apertures. Brady (1879) regarded G. conglobatus as a modification of G. ruber, in which the chambers of the final whorl become predominant in size. Another possibility is that G. obliquus extremus with its similarly depressed final chambers and similar position of the primary aperture, is the ancestral line. Chaisson & Pearson (1997): Specimens of this taxon that are not fully encrusted may be confused with specimens of Globigerinoides extremus having particularly compressed chambers. Gs. conglobatus may be distinguished by its more globose test. Chaisson & Leckie (1993): Remarks: This species is never abundant in Hole 806B. It can be encrusted with secondary calcite. Similar species: See Globigerinoides extremus. |
