Jenkins (1985): G. woodi woodi is distinguished from G. bulloides by its coarser wall and higher arched aperture; from G. woodi decoraperta in not having a high spired test and from G. apertura in not having such a large aperture. In the Early Miocene, low arched apertural forms appear in the populations of G. woodi which increase in number with time and have been named G. woodi connecta (Jenkins, 1964). It seems that G. woodi woodi, which appeared cryptogenically in the Late Oligocene, was ancestral to the above named taxa (except G. bulloides) as well as being ancestral to the Early Miocene Globigerinoides trilobus and G. altiaperturus, which are all linked in having a similar wall ornamentation. G. woodi woodi first appeared in the Late Oligocene and ranged to the Middle Miocene in both New Zealand and southeast Australia. On DSDP Leg 29 it was recorded at Sites 278 and 279 and on Leg 40 at Sites 360 and 362 (Jenkins, 1975, 1978c). |
